Mail-Order Salmon for Dad (+ A Fave Recipe)

If you’re like most people, the first place your mind goes when it’s time to dream up Father’s Day gifts is outside, in the general direction of the grill. And if the dad in question is like most dads, he already has his fair share of tongs, trays, tools and toys. Here’s an idea: How about something that actually gets cooked on the grill? Like, for instance, a box of wild, sustainably-sourced, sockeye salmon from Alaska’s pristine Bristol Bay? A few weeks ago, an Alaskan fisherman named Matt emailed me about his new company, Wild Alaska Direct which delivers boneless meal-size portions of premium sockeye anywhere in the US with free shipping. (If that didn’t sell me, his P.S. about being a gin-and-tonic soulmate certainly did.) Anyway, Matt was nice enough to offer an exclusive Father’s Day giveaway for DALS readers: A 5-pound box of fillet portions, delivered right to a lucky winner’s door. That’s six dinners for two, twelve single portions, or a dinner for you and 11 of your closest friends. How fun is that? To be eligible, all you have to do is comment below. Contest ends Sunday, June 5 at 8:00 ET. (This time only US residents are eligible. Sorry!)

And for those of you who don’t end up being the lucky winner, here’s a recipe we’ve been making like crazy lately. The other night, we served it with a simple beets-and-green-bean salad. So fast. So easy. Good luck!

Grilled Salmon with Herby Horseradish Sauce
You can switch out the sour cream for yogurt for a tangy-er version. If you don’t want to fire up the grill, just pan-fry the fillets, 2 to 3 minutes a side in butter and olive oil over medium heat.
.
For Salmon:
Four 6-ounce sockeye salmon fillets
Olive oil
salt and pepper
.
For sauce
2/3 cup sour cream
1 tablespoon chives
3 tablespoons finely chopped dill
1 tablespoon prepared horseradish
salt and pepper
dash of hot sauce
.
Brush both sides of salmon with olive oil, sprinkle flesh side with salt and pepper. Grill skin-side down over medium-hot coals for 8-10 minutes total, flipping half way through. Note: Sockeye Salmon cooks quickly. Meanwhile, in a small bowl, mix together all sauce ingredients. Serve salmon with a dollop of sauce.
