Twitter’s Redesign Is Pretty Facebook-y And Pretty Cool

There’s a new Facebook in town, and its name is Twitter.
Not really – but Twitter’s new profile redesign sure does look a lot like its social media BFF. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, right?
After murmurs of a redesign floating around for a while, Twitter has unveiled its new look with select profiles (like our very own Jon Henderson) that promises an “easier (and more fun) way to express yourself”.
With a big, shiny we-won’t-call-it-a-cover-photo header picture and the ability to highlight your best tweets, pin specific tweets, and filter other peoples’ timelines by tweets, tweets with photos/videos and @replies, Twitter seems to be delving further into the highly-customizable experience they started with custom timelines not too long ago.
Tweets with the most engagement will appear larger in your timeline to make the most out of what’s working for ya, while pinned tweets are a manual feature that let you place certain tweets at the top of your page. And, as explained above, filtered tweets let you manipulate how other peoples’ timelines are displayed to you.
Not only is the new design cleaner and just-plain more beautiful (and look at all of that branding opportunity for companies), it gives users more control over how their own Twitter persona is displayed and how they interact with others’. And in the highly-styled and highly-curated social media world of the Instagram generation (as well as, again, brands on Twitter), I think we can all agree this control will be welcomed. Which is a good thing! I love the idea of having more ways to make Twitter all your own – and get what you want when looking at other profiles.
The new redesign has been rolled out to a sampling of users (check out the Twitter announcement for a list of VIPs who currently have it) and will be available to all users in the coming weeks.
What do you think of the redesign? Love it? Hate it? Too Facebook “Single White Female”? Let us know in the comments.
