After all, what are memories but an aroma, flavour or feeling that brings us back to an unforgettable moment in time.
I thought you might enjoy these recipes for a retro summer barbecue that I recently cooked up for our Canada Day/Danny’s birthday celebration.

Recipes for a Retro Summer Barbecue
Biting into a juicy slice of watermelon, jumping off a dock into a lake, catching the aroma of slow cooking ribs on the barbecue…these are but a few snippets in time that add up to an unforgettable summer memory.
Our recent backyard gathering was one such event. In the planning stages, I wanted to keep the menu simple and familiar. This wasn’t a terribly adventurous crowd; probably not the event for my Mediterranean Lentil Salad, as delicious as it is.
When seeking recipes for a retro summer barbecue, I went with tried and true from my own repertoire. I’ve rounded them up for you below, as well as additional suggestions for beloved classics that have a broad appeal.
Choose one or two recipes from each category when planning your own menu. Have fun!

Drinks
Honey-Sweetened Peach Lemonade – Fruity and light, this thirst-quenching sip is the perfect summer refresher. My kids favourite, it’s always on the table at summer gatherings.
Raspberry Rhubarb Collins Party Punch – A tangy fruit syrup replaces the sugar in a traditional Tom Collins drink; gin and soda water round out the pretty pink punch. Bonus? This is a big batch cocktail. Mix once, then let guests help themselves.
Iced Tea – Sweet tea is a traditional barbecue bevvy in the South, that much I remember from my travels in Texas and New Mexico. Everyone has a family recipe; mine is simple cold brewed iced tea, sweetened to taste with simple syrup.

Appys:
Herby Ranch Dip & Crudité -Everyone loves a good dip to pair with market fresh veggies and this one is a classic. My recipe is versatile and reliable, so use up what you have. Can be made in advance.
Beet Pickled Deviled Eggs – I love that this retro appetizer is making a comeback. My updated version features a bright pink beet brine! Be sure return the eggs to the fridge after you have passed the plate around to guests; this isn’t the appy to leave out in the sun!

Mini Meatballs – Is it even a retro party without mini meatballs? I think not. My Greek-Inspired Sheet Pan Mini Meatballs always disappear in a flash. I serve these tender and juicy flavour bombs on a bed of garlicy tzatziki and shower them with fresh garden oregano. Delish!
Sides:
Yogurt-Chive Potato Salad – My take on this summer party dish is a creamy, mayo-free update on a classic. Loads of hard boiled eggs, fresh garden chives, dill pickles and much more. Make it a day ahead of time for best results.

Antipasto Pasta Salad – After potato salad, pasta salad makes the most sense for a retro summer barbecue. Every family has their favourites; I love this loaded picnic salad featuring grilled vegetables, cherry tomatoes and a vibrant, herby vinaigrette.
Corn on the Cob – grilled or boiled, whatever works for you! Try a butter bath corn, if you haven’t yet, and save the leftover for my Harvest Corn Chowder.

Pesto Buns or Simple Skillet Cornbread – both are beloved sides and pair well with barbecue.
Iced Melon – Keep it simple with a platter of sliced watermelon, cantaloup and honeydew on ice. Don’t forget to sprinkle the melon with a little sea salt!

Mains:
Do-Ahead Cider Ribs – A mammoth platter of sticky, cider-braised, barbecued-finished ribs has been my big summer party go-to dish for a decade now. There’s no need to change up a successful recipe that requires minimal effort on the day of the event and is loved by all.
Sage-Scented Barbecued Chicken – Simple to execute, this recipe uses fresh garden herbs and grilled lemon to produce a deeply flavourful grilled chicken dinner.

Oven Baked BBQ Chicken Drumsticks – If you want to go with chicken, but are not confident with grilling, this recipe is for you. The chicken is baked, not fried. It’s coated with barbecue potato chips that toast up to crispy perfection.
Desserts:
Cherry Cheesecake Bars – This is my famous Blueberry Slab Cheesecake, simply adapted with a jar of sour cherry jam! I baked it in a 9×9 pan and cut into bars when chilled.
This cheesecake is a great do-ahead dessert. It freezes well, so you can bake it a few weeks ahead of your event. Then slice and serve with fresh cherries.

Mini Berries & Cream Trifles – A nostalgic dessert, especially for those of us with British heritage. My mini jars of trifle feature seasonal summer berries and can be made in advance.
Blueberry Peach Cobbler – A jammy fruit compote topped with a fluffy vanilla biscuit; this is a retro dessert, pure and simple.

Peach Slab Pie with Cornmeal Pecan Streusel – A gorgeous seasonal bake that screams summer! I break the work down into manageable steps and give you lots of do-ahead options. Both the pie dough and the streusel topping may be made a day or two in advance.
Feed-a-Crowd Perfect Chocolate Cake – If a classic chocolate cake is your retro dessert pick, then this recipe will more than feed all your party guests.

Maple Butter Tarts – For Canadians, the butter tart is as nostalgic a dessert as it gets. It has a place on every picnic table in every backyard, always.
