Weekend links and photos

A lot of lovely things happened this week, although none of them were blogging, for better or worse.
Let’s see, there was a morning spent teaching a cooking class to twenty-five 4th graders, which made my palms damp and my heart swell with pride. I discovered it’s just as much fun teaching in a classroom setting than it is in my kitchen.
There was more gardening and planting, including a Concord grape vine, which I am hoping will eventually grow to cover my pergola. It will, right? Grapes vines are new to me, but I am hopeful for future jam, juice and jelly.
There was recipe testing in earnest for a few freelance projects and my next cookbook. There was a Mother’s Day picnic planned and then cancelled, due to rain. There was Saturday’s rained out barbecue and Thursday’s cinq à sept with local food bloggers, which not surprisingly, finished at midnight.
There were a few interviews for a few upcoming publications and one lady asked a question that really got me thinking: “What kind of strengths do you think city folk have that could lend themselves to a homesteading lifestyle?” I thought about writing a post on it…but then writing time was scarce this week.
Then there was this post, which kept me hopping for the better part of the day trying to make sure this little blog didn’t crash with the traffic. Welcome, new readers! It’s been a full week; now onto favourite links and photos.
Here’s what I loved reading around the web this week:
- Gluten-Free Cauliflower Cake :: Gluten Free Girl
- Hibiscus, Rhubarb + Yogurt Ice Pops :: The Bojon Gourmet
- Rhubarb Meringue Cups :: Blogging Over Thyme
- Maple, Fruit and Nut Granola :: A Thought for Food
- A Mother’s Cookbook Shares More Than Recipes :: NY Times Food
- Gingery Pickled Asparagus :: My cookbook recipe by Lori Lange on Community Table
The week in photos, plus a few extra:
Meet the backyard chickens! They are a little fluffier and whiter than last years’ flock. We’re so happy to have them on the homestead and they are already laying us eggs.
Fresh eggs! We’re all pretty tickled about these brown eggs. It’s like getting a gift every time we open the nesting box.
First batch of our fresh eggs, cooked up in butter with a sprinkling of chopped ramps.
Dinner after a full day of gardening has to be serious. Psst, we’re still enjoying the corn we froze last year. So worth it.
Spring is my favourite time to picnic. The wild flowers are out and the bugs are not. We’re making the most of the warm weather.
Mateo declared this dish one of his new Top 10 breakfasts; it’s just something lovely I’m developing for the next cookbook.
Iced coffee is back. So is the homemade iced coffee frappe.
We can’t get enough of these Savoury Steel-Cut Oats with Ramps, Parmesan and Tamari. Now we’re topping the breakfast bowls with one of our brown eggs.
The first burger of the year must be epic, right? This is my burger with smoky onions, relish and homemade buns from Brown Eggs and Jam Jars. It’s been a long winter and it’s good to be grilling once again.
To the mothers out there: Have a lovely day!
