Weekend links and photos
by Aimee
Today I am so very thankful that the month of May has thirty-one days. I wasn’t prepared to turn the calendar and accept the arrival of June quite yet.
We’ve got one more day to get ready. A morning to shop for sun hats, shake down grass seed on the bare patches of lawn and then bake something delicious with rhubarb. An afternoon to take one more walk to look for morels and gather a handful of delicate lily of the valley before they disappear into the ground for another year. And one last evening in May to draw a deep breath before plunging into the busiest, most exciting summer this family has ever experienced.
Thank you to all who commented, emailed and messaged me after my post on gaining perspective. I’ve been fortunate to have a bunch of encouraging conversations, some straight-up solid advice, and a mountain of support – all which have left me with courage and confidence to face each unique situation in my life. I’ve found peace and am very grateful for the support of friends who get me.
A new podcast, a family food website and recipes, here’s what I’ve been loving around the web this week:
- Green Garlic Toast Offers a Hint of Springtime :: NYT Food ~ I’m crazy about radish butter, so can’t wait to try this recipe.
- An Avocado Toast Bar? Yes please. From Shaina Olmanson via Food Fanatic.
- Say hello to Jamie Oliver’s new website: Family Food! You know I’m excited about this. Oh, and Happy 40th Birthday, Jamie!!
- Food52 has a fun new podcast called Burnt Toast that is worth checking out on iTunes.
- Why Growing Herbs is Easy :: Saveur (and, really, all the posts in their ‘Building a Garden’ series are excellent.)
Favourite photos from the past week (and more).
The first rhubarb crisp of the season, with a few raspberries leftover from the deep freeze thrown in for good measure.
Danny and friends getting an early start on a weekend double-batch beer brew. Quite the production!
Peach streusel slab pie for the beer-brewing crew, because when there are recipes like this to develop, it helps to have taste-testers.
Foraged Lilly-of-the-valley at the last light of day. I have a jar of these on my dining room table for the whole month of May.
Cheeseburgers on china, because life is too short not to use the good stuff.
Still dreaming about this spring cake from Mother’s Day.
Collecting our own eggs never gets old.
So much to be thankful for this spring. Now bring on June and summer!
Have a beautiful Sunday, all!
